Responsibility and Sustainability.

Our Responsibility
for sustainable individual mobility.

At the BMW Group, we recognise that long-term economic success is only possible through environmentally and socially responsible action. That’s why these two principles are inseparably linked and embedded in our strategy.

For over 100 years, we have been synonymous with continuous progress. We combine innovation and experience, actively work to reduce our CO₂ emissions, and promote circular economy to save resources and minimise waste.

As we do so, we factor in every aspect of value creation in our vehicles, from design and procurement to the materials we use, production, and recycling at the end of the vehicle lifecycle. Together with our partners, we advocate for fair working conditions and responsible supply chains, and ensure environmental and social standards are implemented throughout.

Our Goals.

The BMW Group is committed to the Paris Agreement and achieving net zero by 2050 at the latest.

We use resources efficiently along our entire value chain.

Secondary First: We are increasing the proportion of secondary materials in our products wherever reasonable and possible.

We support compliance with environmental and social standards (UN Global Compact) by implementing clear responsibilities and a range of measures.

Sustainability
Focus Topics.

We understand sustainability as a holistic process that encompasses environmental, social, and corporate governance issues.

Sustainability in the BMW iX3.
Turning Vision into Reality: The new BMW iX3.

BMW Neue Klasse electric concept car with modern design driving on a road.

A Pioneer in
Holistic Product Sustainability.

The BMW iX3 sets standards in terms of product sustainability across its lifecycle – with a focus on decarbonisation and resource conservation.

With the BMW iX3, we have been able to reduce CO₂e emissions from the supply chain by 35 percent. We did it by using renewable energy and around one-third secondary materials, but also through product and process innovations. The Gen6 battery cells in the high-voltage battery, for example, comprise 50 percent secondary cobalt, lithium and nickel. The entire vehicle was systematically developed according to the principle of „Design for Circularity“.

The new BMW Group plant in Debrecen, Hungary, where the BMW iX3 will be made,  was designed and, built to the BMW iFactory blueprint. It is our first vehicle plant to offer fossil fuel-free regular operations.

Thanks to our holistic sustainability approach, customers opting for the BMW iX3 50 xDrive will achieve a smaller CO₂e footprint than in a similar car with a combustion engine within just one year of driving.

Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs).

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the centrepiece of the Agenda 2030, the UN’s global action plan for a liveable future. We firmly believe that as a company, we can make a major contribution to achieving the SDGs, especially numbers 3, 8, 9, 12 and 13.

A new sustainable development goal is urgently needed to address global challenges.
