BMW Group Intelligent Connected Vehicle.

Page Overview

The BMW Group has a clear strategy: to deliver an inspiring and intuitive driving experience powered by advanced technologies.

This vision is already embodied in the BMW Group’s intelligent connected vehicles today. These seamlessly unite the driver, car and digital world into a single intelligent system, providing context-aware support while continuously evolving and delivering an integrated driving experience. The focus is not on the technology itself but on its benefits for drivers.

The car as an intelligent, connected system.

Modern vehicles are not isolated mobile systems but components in a digital ecosystem that intelligently combines mobility and digital living. Essentially, they are software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

Software Defined Vehicles became a reality at the BMW Group, with the launch of the BMW iX3. Their capabilities are powered by classic vehicle technologies coupled with high-performance computers, software, artificial intelligence (AI) and connectivity. Because most vehicle functions are software- rather than hardware-based, they can be constantly updated across the vehicle lifecycle, with over-the-air updates bringing regular improvements and enhancements straight to the customer.

Driver assistance – collaborative by design.

Intelligent driver assistance supports drivers without compromising the overall in-car experience. BMW Symbiotic Drive seamlessly melds driver assistance with human driving behaviour, allowing drivers to accelerate, steer and brake without having to reactivate the assistance each time. The nature of its support is determined by their personal driving style, through a cooperative approach that is central to the new BMW Level 2 driver assistance systems.

Technology in the service of drivers.

Intelligent connected vehicle shows how the BMW Group envisions the seamless integration of digital technologies.

Digital technologies create value not through their complexity but through their impact. Their relevance lies in their capacity to simplify interaction, provide orientation, keep vehicles up to date, and provide meaningful support for drivers in a wide range of driving situations.

The BMW Group’s approach sets a clear direction within contemporary automotive development: technology is a means to an end, not an end in itself, and designed to deepen the connection between car and driver while redefining sheer driving pleasure for the digital age.

FAQs on Intelligent Connected Vehicle.

Intelligent connected vehicles draw on complex technologies to create intuitive and inspiring experiences. They seamlessly unite the driver, car and digital world into a single intelligent system, providing context-aware support while continuously evolving and delivering an integrated driving experience. The focus is not on the technology itself but on its benefits for drivers.

In software-defined vehicles, software serves as the foundation for vehicle functions, the customer experience and continuous digital updates across the vehicle lifecycle. The BMW Group entered the era of the software-defined vehicle back in 2018, when it first introduced over-the-air capabilities that enabled remote updates and vehicle function extensions. Later, with the launch of the Neue Klasse in 2025, the entire vehicle architecture was fundamentally redesigned with an even stronger focus on software. This new architecture is now being rolled out across vehicle segments and powertrain variants.

BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X delivers only the information that matters, precisely when it is needed. It is built around four elements: the BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects key information across the windscreen; the Central Display, which consolidates additional vehicle functions; the Multifunction Steering Wheel, for eyes-on-the-road interaction; and the BMW 3D Head-Up Display, which presents information in a spatially layered format.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant allows drivers to control vehicle functions and access information through natural voice interaction. With an enhanced understanding of context, it can also manage multiple requests within a single conversation. Powered by AI, it intelligently connects information, vehicle functions and next steps to provide meaningful support for drivers.

The BMW Group seamlessly connects vehicles, smartphones, and cloud-based and digital services for a fully integrated user experience. Drivers can transfer their personal profiles and settings to the car via their BMW ID or My BMW app, while the Digital Key provides easier vehicle access. A range of entertainment services further enhance the journey, giving occupants easy access to their chosen services and settings at any time.

Over-the-air updates wirelessly update the software in appropriately equipped BMW Group vehicles. Depending on the market and model concerned, new or enhanced functions are introduced directly into the car, allowing users to benefit while their car is on the road. As of late 2026, approx. 11 million BMW Group vehicles worldwide can be updated in this way.
