BMW Group Glossary.

Technical terms from A to Z.

Air Performance light alloy wheels.

BMW Air Performance wheels are specially developed, aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels that reduce drag and weight compared to conventional wheels. They consist of an aluminium base wheel and individual inserts between the spokes, resulting in a more closed surface that minimises turbulence and increases range.

BMW Charging.

A mobility service that allows the use of charging stations in what is currently (in 2020) the world’s largest network of public charging stations. The charging stations are displayed in the navigation system, by app and online.

BMW ConncectedDrive.

BMW ConnectedDrive connects the driver and vehicle with the outside world and is the umbrella term for the digital services offered by BMW.

BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

A BMW-specific online platform where customers can subscribe to various BMW Digital Services to expand the functionality of their vehicle.

BMW Digital Key Plus.

Digital services. Functionality like the BMW Digital Key with the additional option of leaving the smartphone in your pocket, whereby the vehicle is automatically unlocked by ultra-wideband signals when it is approached. Can be transferred between iPhone and Android devices and forwarded by email, SMS or other messenger services, for example, without the receiver needing an app or BMW ID. An important step on the path towards cross-platform interoperability and the establishment of the smartphone as a digital vehicle key.

BMW Digital Premium.

Subscription model that gives BMW customers flexible access to the latest premium digital services, such as the Security Assistant, enhanced navigation and unlimited connectivity for entertainment content: available to book via the BMW Store online, via the My BMW app or in the vehicle via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. Alternatively, BMW Digital Premium is also available as an optional extra ex factory with a fixed term that varies by market.

BMW Dynamic Performance Control.

Dynamic Performance Control is the software that determines the optimum distribution of dynamic driving forces and their directional vectors (i.e. drive, brakes, steering) in the Gen6's fully electric drive system.

BMW eDrive Technology.

BMW eDrive is the pioneering electric drive technology from BMW that ensures locally emission-free driving pleasure in all-electric and plug-in hybrid models. The core components are highly efficient electric motors, power electronics and lithium-ion high-voltage batteries.

BMW EfficientDynamics.

A package of measures, with which fuel consumption and thus vehicle emissions are reduced, e.g. through weight savings, and possibly increases performance.

BMW Heart of Joy.

Central control unit that is responsible for drive, brakes, charging, recuperation and subfunctions of the steering. It processes information ten times faster than previous systems and, in conjunction with the software BMW Dynamic Performance Control, calculates all driving dynamics functions with a new level of speed and precision. In Aftersales (especially in diagnosis), it is designated "integration platform drive" and features with two control unit addresses: IPF und IPF2.

BMW HypersonX.

BMW HypersonX was developed by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio and comprises 43 sound symbols as well as special driving sounds for Personal and Sport Mode. The multidimensional sound spectrum adapts the sounds precisely to the driving situation and thus ensures an emotional interaction between driver and vehicle. The basis is provided by the technological advances in hardware and software associated with the New Class. The revolutionary BMW Operating System X operating system and a newly developed audio control unit, which enables a significant expansion of the dynamic range, create the conditions for an innovative audio architecture.

BMW IconicSounds Electric.

Unmistakable sound, generated by a BMW powered by eDrive, that subtly encircles the vehicle and alerts other road users in the low speed range (e.g. at speeds below 30 km/h) to the otherwise almost noiseless electrified vehicle. Inside the vehicle, a drive sound is generated that is adapted to the selected driving mode (e.g. sporty, balanced, reduced). 

BMW ID.

Standardised user ID which the customer can use to log on to all BMW digital touchpoints, for example the user name for the ConnectedDrive account, which is used to log on to the BMW ConnectedDrive customer portal or for the driver profile in the vehicle. Naming to be used from 07/2021 onwards. See Personal Profile for naming valid up until 07/2021.

BMW iFactory.

The BMW iFACTORY is our visionary strategy for car production. It represents a holistic manufacturing concept and stands for efficiency, sustainability and digitalisation for future-proof car production. The BMW iFACTORY focuses on artificial intelligence, circular economy, autonomous transport systems and sustainable energy sources.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Intelligent, digital speech recognition system that reacts to the activation word "Hey BMW" and can control various vehicle functions in addition to simple tasks such as entering a navigation destination. It learns the driver's procedures, habits and preferred settings.

BMW Maps.

Cloud-based navigation system with optimised route guidance thanks to Connected Cars. Dynamically calculates the route based on real-time data (e.g. about danger areas) and forecast models, with arrival time continuously updated. The destination search can be done via free text input and is extended with POI information (e.g. user ratings, opening hours, pictures). Connected Parking considers the vehicle size when searching for a parking space. Geofencing automatically switches the vehicle to pure electric drive mode in environmental zones.

BMW Kidney Iconic Glow.

Optional equipment; radiator grille lighting with innovative LED fibre technology in white light colour. For the following applications, the lighting can be set in the Central Display: Opening/closing the vehicle, opening the doors or the tailgate, activating the ambient lighting. By activating the ambient lighting, it is also possible to use it during the journey.

BMW Operating System X.

Advanced development of the BMW iDrive system that uses Software Update to create a fully adaptive system. A new generation of the user interface marks the jump to the next generation (e.g. from 7 to 8). Version upgrades with minor updates and improvements (e.g. 8.xx) are offered to the customer several times a year. BMW operating system for the onboard user interface from 2025.

BMW Originals.

BMW Originals is entertainment content (for front-seat passengers or rear-seat entertainment) produced by BMW.

BMW Panoramic iDrive.

Driver-orientated display and operating concept starting with the Neue Klasse. Includes, for example, BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW 3D Head-up Display, Central Display and a steering wheel with Shy Tech operating elements.

BMW Panoramic Vision.

Windscreen projection that is visible to all passengers. Replaces the instrument cluster. It extends across the complete width of the windscreen and displays all information relevant to driving and infotainment.

BMW Passenger Screen.

Right-hand section of the monolithic display cluster above the centre console which, together with the driver’s display (in BMW Panoramic Vision) and the BMW 3D Head-up Display, makes up the visual operating interface between the front-seat occupants and the vehicle. The left-hand section of the display cluster is designated the Central Display. The right and left sections are not connected to each other and form separate displays placed side by side. 

BMW Symbiotic Drive.

Symbiotic Drive describes the symbiotic interaction between humans and cars in the field of driver assistance and automated driving.

BMW Theatre Screen.

Display as part of the rear-seat entertainment Experience with BMW Touch Command. Is mounted on the headliner with a kinematic element and can be folded out and adjusted using various control modules (via the door control module, the roof control centre, the Central Display or even on the Theatre Screen itself). Theatre Moments is staged using My Modes: the rear blind and the roller sunblinds close, the interior lighting is dimmed and the rear seat moves to a comfortable position. 

Chili Red / British Racing Green / Indigo Sunset Blue.

Specific brand color shades of the MINI brand.

City-/ Highway Assistant.

Driver assistance at L2+ level.

Classic Trim.

MINI Mid-level trim / mid-range equipment.

Dashboard Strap.

Dashboard Strap used by MINI.

Double Cloth.

Double Cloth refers to a textile seat upholstery material used by MINI, featuring a two‑layer fabric construction that creates a distinct visual depth and tactile feel.

Dual-Finish.

Dual finish refers to a paint finish in which both matt and metallic paints are used in the same colour.

Econeer.

BMW's own term for textiles made from at least 95% recycled material. 

Essential Trim.

Frozen.

Frozen is the designation for matt paint.

Frunk.

Storage space on Battery Electric Vehicles. Located under the bonnet in place of the combustion engine. 

Gen6.


6th generation of BMW eDrive technology (Gen6) for cell, storage and motor with technonolgical long jump (round cell battery) and 800Volt system voltage/charging speed.  

Go‑Kart Feeling.

MINIs direct, agile and highly responsive driving experience inspired by the handling and dynamics of a go‑kart.

Go‑Kart Mode, Green Mode, Vivid Mode, Balance Mode, Personal Mode, Timeless Mode & Trail Mode. 

Go‑Kart Mode – sporty, dynamic driving mode (MINI)
Green Mode – efficient, resource‑conserving mode (MINI)
Vivid Mode – emotionally driven, visually focused experience mode (MINI)

Describes the gradient of two colour tones in the exterior paint.

Essential, Contemporary, Progressiv, M Sport und BMW Invidual with leather, Curated interiors with the seat as the leading element. 

JCW Trim.

Sport‑focused top trim level derived from MINI’s “John Cooper Works” motorsport heritage.
The JCW Trim emphasizes performance‑oriented design, driving dynamics, and motorsport character through trim‑specific exterior styling, interior details, and sporty equipment features. It represents a design and performance orientation, not a separate engine or powertrain category.

M PerformTex.

BMW's own term for microfibre blend used for M Sport seats.

Metallic.

Matte / satin-finish paint.

MINI Aceman.

Aceman refers to a fully electric MINI crossover model, positioned between the MINI Cooper and the MINI Countryman. The MINI Aceman combines compact proportions with increased everyday versatility, offers seating for five, and follows the new MINI design language “Charismatic Simplicity.” It is available exclusively with electric powertrains and represents urban mobility paired with MINI’s characteristic go‑kart driving feel.

MINI Asteroid Spoke.

Asteroid Spoke is a robust, technical multi‑spoke wheel design with a strong visual presence.

Key characteristics:
faceted, star‑like spoke structure
conveys strength, stability and premium solidity
often finished in Refined Silver or Vibrant Silver
frequently used on larger MINI models or as winter wheel designs

Asteroid Spoke combines functional durability with a confident, high‑quality appearance.

MINI Clubman.

MINI Compact car with split doors.

MINI Contrast Roof.

MINI Contrast Roof refers to a distinctive design feature where the vehicle roof is painted in a contrasting colour to the body.
It is an iconic MINI styling element, rooted in the heritage of the classic Mini and still a key expression of individualisation and character today.

MINI Yours is MINI’s exclusive design and personalisation programme, offering premium materials, distinctive colours, surfaces and design features for both interior and exterior.

Multitone Fabric.

Multitone Fabric refers to a textile interior material used by MINI that combines multiple colour tones within a single fabric, creating a rich, visually textured surface.

Multitone Roof.

Multitone Roof refers to a distinctive MINI roof design featuring multiple colours blended into a smooth gradient, rather than a single, uniform roof colour.

My BMW App.

A digital assistant on a smartphone that establishes a direct, constant connection to the vehicle. Features include remote vehicle control (e.g. locking and unlocking the vehicle) and the ability to pre-configure certain vehicle settings from home and prior to delivery to the customer. Navigation destinations and the vehicle’s location data can also be accessed via the app. Charging and electric routes can also be conveniently planned whilst on the move or at home and transferred to the vehicle. 

My Modes.

Native software in the vehicle that offers occupants a comprehensive experience across various modes (Personal Mode, Sport Mode, Efficient Mode, Silent Mode) by coordinating the functions of the interior (e.g. lighting, display colour, ambient lighting) with the driving experience. The modes are controlled via touch on the central display or by voice command.

My Moments.

A digital experience that is interwoven with the entire vehicle, so that the customer not only experiences the use of a single digital service, but also the staging and embedding of the content with vehicle functions.

Neue Klasse.

New cluster architecture starting with the new BMW iX3. The new architecture encompasses production, development, factory planning, the electric drive, the display and operating concept, the typical BMW driving experience and the design. The name refers to the model series of the 1960s, with which BMW established itself as a manufacturer of sporty cars that were also suitable for everyday use, which contributed significantly to the brand's later success and positioning as a premium manufacturer. the saloons and coupés in this series, which were equipped with four-cylinder in-line engines and offered innovations such as independent wheel suspension and disc brakes, are particularly well-known.

Night Flash Spoke.

Night Flash Spoke refers to a dynamic, performance‑oriented alloy wheel design featuring sharply defined, confident spoke lines. Night Flash Spoke is often associated with sporty or electric MINI models, reinforcing a progressive and high‑energy appearance.

Onboarding-Wizard.

After initial registration with the BMW ID, the onboarding wizard guides the customer through the core functions of the vehicle. This includes setting up the BMW Digital Key, Bluetooth pairing with the mobile phone or setting up the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Personal Dashboard.

Customised positioning of the individual widgets in the BMW Panoramic Vision display.

Pillar-to-pillar.

The BMW Panoramic Vision is a newly developed display concept from BMW for projecting content directly onto the lower section of the windscreen, where information appears on a black printed surface stretching from A-pillar to A-pillar (= pillar-to-pillar).

QuickSelect.

Enhancement of the main view of the vehicle’s internal user interface with extended touch functions, on which the most important commands can be entered directly on the start screen. Relevant information and control functions are displayed on a single level, meaning it is no longer necessary to navigate through several submenus.

Resolute / Untold / Untamed.

Product design philosophy that intelligently integrates innovative technology into the design so that it is almost invisible.

Silent Mode.

Digital services. Driving mode within My Modes, in which the layout of the instrument cluster, Central Display and BMW Panoramic Vision are reduced and the brightness is dimmed; there is a light dynamic interior lighting scene with reduced intensity, the shades are closed, the Active Sound Design inside is reduced, a subtle, calming fragrance is emitted at low intensity, the climate control blower is reduced and the chassis and drive are comfortably tuned. The core message is to perceive the vehicle as a place of retreat.

Soft-Stop.

Subfunction of the BMW Dynamic Performance Control, which provides enhanced comfort when stopping by completely preventing the stopping jolt and brake noise, even at low speed. This is made possible by efficient recuperation right down to standstill. Is available for battery electric vehicles with sixth generation drive.

Split Doors. 

Split Doors (MINI Clubman).

Sports Activity Coupé (SAC).

Body variant equivalent to a shortened Sports Activity Vehicle, combining the robust aesthetics of a BMW X vehicle with the emotionality and sportiness of a BMW Coupé. 

Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).

Specific term for SUV-like vehicles with a focus on sportiness and driving dynamics. Body variant emulating a Saloon in terms of driving comfort, introduced to the BMW range in 1999 with the BMW X5. It differs from a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) by placing greater emphasis on leisure than utility (e.g. by offering a more refined interior, an innovative space concept, greater driving comfort and improved vehicle dynamics regardless of the ground conditions). 

Superbrain.

Superbrains are central control units, such as the Heart of Joy. (Central control unit responsible for drive, braking, charging, recuperation and partial steering functions).

Tartan Edition.

MINI Special edition with a heritage-inspired design.

Toggle Bar.

The Toggle Bar in MINI vehicles refers to the distinctive row of physical toggle switches located in the central cockpit area, usually positioned below the central display.

Touring.

A Touring model from BMW is the designation for an estate car.

Trim.

MINI Trim level.

Solid paint.

Non‑Metallic carpaint.

Untamed Edition.

MINI Lifestyle‑ and design‑focused edition emphasizing adventure, connection to nature, and a rugged, authentic character.

Veganza.

BMW's own term for artificial leather.

Verdana.

BMW's own term for purely plant- and mineral-based surface material (petroleum-free).

Vescin.

sustainable, leather‑free upholstery material.

Widget.

Customizable window that displays relevant content from the selected apps (e.g. incoming calls, e-mail inbox, weather).

xDrive.

All-wheel system that variably distributes the driving power to the front and rear axles depending on the driving situation and road conditions.
