The challenge was ambitious – how far can the new BMW iX3 50 xDrive go on a single charge? Six members of the development team decided to find out. They drove the first model of the Neue Klasse with the new Gen6 eDrive technology from BMW Group Plant Debrecen in Hungary to BMW Welt in Munich – without stopping to recharge. The Neue Klasse vehicle completed the 1007.7-kilometre journey, showcasing how far efficiency and engineering have advanced. For an exciting glimpse of the BMW iX3 50 xDrive and its remarkable performance, check out this video.
1007.7 kilometres
fully electric. Without charging.
The journey from Debrecen to Munich.
The starting point was at the BMW Group’s new plant in Debrecen in Hungary, where the new BMW iX3 is built. After extensive preparation – including simulations, route analyses and tests – the BMW developers began their journey via Budapest and Vienna towards Munich. To save energy, they mostly drove on country roads and switched off unnecessary systems such as seat heating, air-conditioning and navigation. To comply with the legally required rest period, the team stopped for an overnight break in St Pölten, Austria.
After 1007.7 kilometres in total, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive finally arrived at BMW Welt with two percent charge remaining in its high-voltage battery – a testament to the extraordinary precision of the journey. It was made possible by experts from multiple development departments who work with their passion and know-how, to struck the perfect balance between speed, energy consumption and battery use.
Along the way, the team stopped off at two key sites in BMW’s production network: Plant Steyr, home to BMW’s new sixth-generation e-drive, used in the iX3 and the Neue Klasse, and Plant Landshut, where the Energy Master for the Neue Klasse is produced. Both facilities exemplify the technological depth and interconnectedness that define the BMW Group.
Symbol of future mobility.
The BMW iX3 50 xDrive’s 1007.7-kilometre trip is more than a record-breaking range for a fully electric vehicle – it’s a powerful demonstration of the BMW Group’s innovation, efficiency and engineering expertise. The Neue Klasse stands as a symbol of a new era that will be fully electric, digital and sustainable. The Neue Klasse and the Gen6 provide clear proof that at BMW, electromobility and long-distance driving have long been a reality – driven by people passionate about shaping progress.
“You are true pioneers of the Neue Klasse. Thank you for rising to this challenge so successfully! In this BMW iX3, you have travelled further than any other electric BMW SAV to date and proved that the Neue Klasse can achieve over 1000 km on a single charge,” said Mike Reichelt, project lead for the Neue Klasse BMW, as he welcomed the team to Munich.
