CO₂ Reduction.

The BMW Group has a long tradition of reducing its impact on nature and the environment. Back in 1973, we became the first carmaker in the world to introduce an environmental officer in our organisation. Going forward, we intend to remain a role model and continue to develop. We conserve resources, reduce emissions and avoid waste, and when we choose locations for our sites, we do so with a clear focus on the environment.

We have ambitious targets for carbon emissions reductions by 2030. Since 2006 we have already cut emissions per vehicle in production by more than 70 percent, and we are now working to slash our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by another 80 percent between 2019 and 2030. This will bring CO2 emissions down to less than 10 percent of their original levels. A key contributor in this regard is production, which is responsible for around 90 per cent of our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

THE BMW GROUP IS COMMITTED TO ACHIEVING THE 1.5°C TARGET.

THE BMW Group is the first German carmaker to join the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C”. This includes our commitment to achieving climate-neutrality along the value chain by 2050 latest.

It also automatically makes us a member of the UN’s Race to Zero programme.

CONCRETE MEASURES.

  • We have restructured our supply chain – with transparency and to the highest standards.
  • Together with our suppliers, we agree measures into reduce CO2 emissions from our supply chain. Our aluminium and steel suppliers, for example, must use green electricity.
  • We improve biodiversity at our sites by preserving natural habitats.
  • We commit to our chosen locations and offer secure employment.

CONCRETE MEASURES.

  • Since July 2020 all the electricity we have sourced externally has been from renewable sources.
  • Since 2021, we have been supporting further CO2 reductions through projects outside our own value chain.

  • Our own wind farm at Plant Leipzig, plus regionally sourced green electricity from hydropower in Munich and Dingolfing.

HELPING TO PROTECT THE CLIMATE BEYOND OUR OWN VALUE CHAIN..

At the BMW Group, our goal is to consistently reduce direct and indirect CO2 emissions from our plants and sites. That’s why since 2021, we have been involved in CO2 reduction projects beyond our own value chain as well. We support these initiatives voluntarily and without them counting towards our CO2 reduction targets.

The nature of our involvement depends on stringent quality requirements such as additionality, lasting impact and social benefit, and we work with leading providers such as First Climate and atmosfair to implement the projects.

WE ARE REDUCING THE ACTUAL EMISSIONS GENERATED BY OUR VEHICLES DURING USE.


OUR VISION.

  • To deliver more than 50 percent fully electric vehicles before 2030 – market conditions, the price and availability of raw materials, and the pace of charging infrastructure development in the second half of this decade permitting.
  • To increase the share of emission-free kilometres driven - with eDrive Zones.
  • To reduce fuel consumption and increase range – with Efficient Dynamics.
  • To remain open to all technologies.

CONCRETE MEASURES.

  • The BMW Group is a pioneer in e-mobility and has already delivered more than 2 million electrified vehicles to customers - almost half of them BEVs.
  • From 2024 the BMW Group offers a range of BEVs in almost every key segment it serves and has more than 15 all-electric models by its various brands on the market. 
  • In 2024, one in five of our latest vehicles have an all-electric drive system. In 2025 that figure will rise to one in four new vehicles delivered.

OUR VISION.

  • To increase the proportion of secondary materials.
  • To return end-of-life vehicles to the raw material cycle.
  • To create vehicle architectures and designs for easier recycling.
  • To improve the recyclability of vehicles and offer a second life for batteries.

CONCRETE MEASURES.

  • We recover more than 90% of the material from our high-voltage batteries - with an innovative process.
  • The BMW Group has teamed up with our national sales companies and importers to organise a take-back scheme for end-of-life vehicles in 32 countries, so far. We now have over 2,800 return points to enable the eco-friendly recycling.

Year after year, we succeed in lowering CO₂ emissions across the company. How can we achieve this? We consistently invest in our energy efficiency – and taking advantage of the possibilities opened up by digitalisation. We are already applying data analytics methods in production – for instance, to minimise scrapped parts in the body shop or enable predictive maintenance for machinery.

The BMW Group follows the principle of continuous improvement – especially when looking for new, innovative and sustainable possibilities for reducing energy consumption. To achieve this, we are investing in efficient technologies, optimising existing processes and transitioning our energy supply to renewable energies. In this way, we were able to reduce resource consumption per vehicle produced by an average of 56.7 percent in 2020 from 2006 levels. In this way, we were able to reduce resource consumption per vehicle produced by an average of nearly 60 percent in 2021 from 2006 levels.

We have already taken an important step in the field of renewable energy: All BMW Group locations worldwide by 100-percent green power from renewable energy sources delivered by suppliers. At the same time, the BMW Group will meet a growing percentage of its electricity needs through so-called Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), i.e. by sourcing power directly from defined renewable energy generation plants.
