CIRCULARITY.

Responsible resource management plays a key role at the BMW Group. The technologies that will be decisive for electromobility cannot rely solely on primary materials in the long run – for instance, for production of battery cells. We aim to change the underlying flow of resources to make it more sustainable. Our goal is to use high-quality secondary material to reduce our resource consumption. We also want to be able to track actual further use of raw materials in the cycle.

Economical Use of Resources.

Options for economical use of resources are already considered during the design process and product development. Our products are designed so that as many material cycles as possible can operate as closed loops. Materials are recycled wherever it makes sense to do so, so we can close the loop within the recovery chain. With appropriate processing, any recoverable materials produced can be reused as recycled material. For this reason, we do not consider end-of-life vehicles as waste to be disposed of, but as a source of secondary raw materials. That is why the BMW Group is committed to reintroducing end-of-life vehicles, components and materials back into the raw materials cycle.

TAKING BACK OF END-OF-LIFE VEHICLES.

Together with its sales organisations in each country, BMW Group has already organised the taking back of end-of-life vehicles in 30 countries and offers environmentally friendly recycling services at more than 2,800 take-back centres.

RECYCLABILITY.

All BMW Group vehicles released onto the market since 2008 fulfil legal requirements worldwide for recycling of end-of-life vehicles, components and materials. Vehicles registered in the European Union already have to be 95 percent recyclable. Over the next few years, the BMW Group aims to continue increasing the percentage of recycled secondary material in its vehicles, while systematically enhancing its recycling methods.

MINIMISE THE AMOUNT OF WASTE.

To minimise the amount of waste, the BMW Group has developed recycling and processing concepts that are tailored to the waste flows at different plants, to each region's legal requirements and to the disposal structures available at the sites. We also aim to expand our expertise in development and production of battery cells and create more transparency around what happens to end-of-life vehicles and their resources and how they are recycled.

Production

VENTURING INTO VALUABLE TECH.

Through its own venture capital fund BMW i Ventures, the BMW Group has invested in key technologies that can make a decisive contribution towards achieving its long-term vision of carbon neutrality. In 2020, for example, BMWi Ventures invested in PureCycle, the first company in the world that can recycle polypropylene (an essential vehicle component) into a colourless and odourless native state. The BMW Group also invested in Prometheus Fuels, which has developed a technology that enables carbon-neutral synthetic fuels to be produced using green energy.
