Already today, driver assistance systems support safe and comfortable driving with more than 40 functions. They can drive simple sections themselves, when the driver can intervene at any time. In future this will no longer be necessary. Automated driving becomes autonomous driving, the car is transformed from a co-driver into a chauffeur. And the driving experience of the future gains in freedom and leisure time. Already today, our vehicles are capable of Level 2 automated driving.

The new driving experience combines powerful software as well as digital products and services with the one-of-a-kind user experience of the BMW iDrive. With our over-the-air Remote Software Upgrade feature, we offer constant access to the latest digital services and functions. The My BMW App and MINI App connect the smartphone and vehicle. The integration of third-party apps completes the digital customer experience. So what sets our vehicles apart is their extensive connectivity; they stand for connected mobility in all its dimensions, integrate seamlessly into the customers’ everyday life and add value with a magic of its own.

The use of AI is an integral part of the digital transformation at the BMW Group. The company is already using AI along the entire value chain, generating added value for customers, products, employees and processes. The Data & AI initiative, which deals with data analytics and machine learning across the board, also ensures rapid networking, knowledge and technology transfer throughout the company.

BMW and MINI CarData enable service providers to offer tailor-made services based on telematics data from the vehicle. Data protection and transparency regarding the use of data have the highest priority.

BMW Group Data Ecosystem.

The BMW Group has a long history of vehicle connectivity. Back in 1997, BMW installed the first SIM cards in vehicles, enabling “intelligent emergency calls” for the first time in the US. Since then, the company has put more than 14 million connected vehicles onto the roads. In a 24-hour period, this fleet drives 140 million kilometres, collecting information along the way – for example, from 25 million traffic signs.

With Automated Valet Parking, customers can simply pull up in the multi-storey car park or in the car park and get out - the vehicle in interaction with the infrastructure does the rest.

The digital era of mobility.

What range do I have left? How much charge does my battery have? When is the next service appointment? What’s new in the brand world of BMW and MINI? And what address should be entered in the navigation system? The My BMW App and the MINI App connect the vehicle and smartphone and thus deliver a digital customer experience. The driver can check the car’s status very conveniently at any time using the app. How are the tyres? The AI-supported digital tyre diagnosis feature provides the answer. Checking the range for the next journey, booking a workshop appointment, locating the vehicle or locking and unlocking it remotely – none of this is a problem. More than 6.2 million users worldwide (as at the beginning of 2022) are already using the My BMW App and the MINI App today.

We at the BMW Group were one of the first car manufacturers to identify the potential of digitisation as far as back as 1998 with ConnectedDrive. With our digital innovations and connectivity options, we have shaped the industry and set standards. Even today we continue to move forward and add new chapters to the success story so far, with our connected vehicles integrating seamlessly into our customers’ digital eco system. BMW Remote Software Upgrades ensure that vehicles are always up to date. With more than 2.5 million connected vehicles (as at the beginning of 2022), BMW already today has the largest fleet that can be updated over the air. Smartphone and third-party integration as well as connectivity with other vehicles and infrastructure delivers the perfect digital customer experience and transforms the intelligent car into a smart device.

The new 5G mobile radio standard significantly increases the data transmission options compared to the previous standard. This will create new, data-based applications and increase the quality of existing applications many times over. For mobility, this means a comprehensive extension of data-based services in the fields of entertainment and infotainment, automated and assisted driving and, above all, road safety. The 5G standard is a decisive accelerator for future innovations in mobility and other fields of application.

With the BMW iX, the BMW Group was the first premium manufacturer to incorporate the 5G mobile radio standard in a production vehicle available worldwide. The car is transformed into a fully connected device and redefines the driving experience through the use of the 5G technology. The customers benefit from high bandwidth and low latency. This also means improved telephony, smooth surfing, streaming and a powerful WiFi hotspot thanks to integration of the 5G technology.

With BMW Labs, customers have the possibility to test new developments at an early stage, to accompany them on their path and to make them even better through their feedback.
