THE BMW GROUP – AN E-MOBILITY PIONEER.

ELECTRIFY YOU.

The BMW Group embodies an electrifying dimension of ground-breaking driving pleasure. The company’s fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology shows how electromobility can be a fascinating part of everyday life: locally emission-free, with dynamic, virtually silent power development and optimised long-distance capabilities. The new, highly-integrated electric powertrain component combines an electric engine, power electronics and transmission in one compact housing – which means it can be flexibly integrated into different vehicle architectures. In this way, the BMW Group can systematically implement its “Power of Choice” approach to meet different customer demands worldwide. The BMW X3 is the first model to offer a choice of highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid system and, in the case of the BMW iX3, a pure electric drive train with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology.

The BMW Group already has more than 500,000 vehicles with electrified drive trains on roads around the world – with more joining them every day. The company has been a pioneer in alternative drive technologies for years. In addition to the BMW i3 and the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, both introduced in 2013, the latest models with electrified drive train, like the pure electric MINI Cooper SE and the plug-in hybrid models of the BMW X family, the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series, provide a unique combination of sustainability and driving pleasure.

We firmly believe different alternative drive trains will exist side by side in the future; there will not just be one solution that can meet all customers’ mobility needs around the world.

Production

The BMW Group relies on the company’s existing expertise and in-house capacities for both development and production of BMW eDrive technology. Electric engines and high-voltage batteries are now produced at six different locations in the BMW Group’s international production network. Once the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology is introduced, that number will increase to 11 plants worldwide.

Technology

The BMW Group’s strategy for sustainable mobility goes far beyond locally emission-free driving. The environmental balance of every vehicle is analysed in its entirety and optimised: from selection of materials to production, throughout its service life, to recyclability. To conserve resources and reduce CO2 emissions, production uses electricity exclusively obtained from renewable energy sources like wind and hydroelectric power.

Sustainability

Ecological and social responsibility throughout the value chain are embedded in the BMW Group strategy. For this reason, the BMW Group is sourcing the cobalt needed to produce high-voltage batteries directly from highly industrialised mining companies, monitoring observance of social and environmental standards, and supplying the raw material to battery cell producers. Rare earths will also no longer be used in BMW drive trains from 2021.

Charging

Charging infrastructure is steadily expanding and charging times getting shorter, with efficient wallboxes in homes and underground garages, high-power charging stations along motorways, and public charging posts in city centres and residential areas. Drivers who want to use electric power alone on longer trips can often charge their vehicle for the next leg in the time it takes for a coffee break. BMW Charging already shows how intelligent charging works – with full control over costs, easy handling and all services delivered by one provider.

eDrive Zones

The BMW Group’s digital eDrive Zones service provides another important boost for electromobility in urban settings. As soon as a BMW plug-in hybrid with the activated BMW eDrive Zone function enters a designated inner-city area, the vehicle automatically switches to pure electric operating mode. This BMW Group service – the only one of its kind worldwide – is already increasing the percentage of pure electric driving and helping improve air quality in more than 80 European cities. The driver also benefits directly from lower fuel costs and unrestricted access to green zones in cities.
