On 23 August, Pebble Beach Golf Links, California, was just a few days away from hosting the annual Concours d’Elegance – one of the world’s most prestigious exhibitions of vintage cars and a contest unlike any other. But there was already plenty to see during the Pebble Beach Automotive Week: not least, the new BMW Z4.
With its dynamic proportions, emotional design and fascinating sportiness, the open-top two-seater takes the classic roadster concept into the present and beyond – in exactly the same place where the BMW Concept Z4 was unveiled a year earlier.
To showcase the exclusivity of the BMW Z4, a very special limited edition was chosen for the roadster’s premiere: the exclusive BMW Z4 M40i First Edition (combined fuel consumption: 7.1-7.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 162-168 g/km*). This special edition impresses not only with the agility, precision and dynamic handling typical of BMW M Performance models, but also with its highly sophisticated design and equipment features, including body paintwork in Frozen Orange metallic.
Expressive body paintwork is combined with an electrically operated textile soft top in anthracite with silver effect, the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, black exterior mirror caps and 19-inch light alloy wheels with a bicolour, double-spoke design. The interior of the edition model comprises a black Vernasca leather trim with decorative stitching, electrically adjustable seats with memory function, ambient light option and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System. Adaptive LED headlights with matrix function for high beam, BMW Head-Up Display featured for the first time in a roadster and the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with the latest networking technology underline how far the traditional concept of the two-seater, open-top sports car has come in the new BMW Z4.
As you would expect from a genuine roadster, everything is geared towards performance and sheer driving pleasure. The BMW Z4 M40i First Edition delivers in all areas, thanks to an extremely powerful 250 kW/340 hp, straight six-cylinder engine and a sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport braking system and an electronically controlled M Sport differential in the rear axle transmission. The result? 0 to 100 in just 4.6 seconds.
The roadster is instantly recognisable as a true BMW – thanks to both modern and traditional optical highlights, such as vertically-aligned headlights, the BMW kidney grille with mesh design, a bonnet that stretches over the wheels like a sports car, large air breathers on the front wheel arches and a distinctive spoiler integrated into the rear lid. The design of the interior also focuses on the pure sportiness of the new BMW Z4. The driver-oriented cockpit styling is underscored by dynamic forward-oriented lines.
Details of further engine variants, technical innovations, equipment features and more were announced on 19 September 2018. Enthusiasts will have a chance to experience the dynamic performance and exclusivity of the BMW Z4 at the Mondial de l’Automobile from 4 –14 October in Paris. Otherwise, fans will have to wait for the global market launch in spring 2019.

In 1969, when Apollo 11 landed on the moon, the impossible became possible. Today, the BMW Group is about to realise another dream: the dream of autonomous driving. The same principle still applies: Without the knowhow and innovative spirit of scientists, engineers and developers, milestones like these would not be possible. For this reason, the BMW Group, with many other supporters, has founded the BMW Summer School to promote the exchange of innovative ideas among young scientists.
Four destinations, three continents, five days and two strong partners – those are the facts behind the BMW Vision iNEXT World Flight. In collaboration with Lufthansa Cargo, the BMW Group presented its latest Vision Vehicle, the BMW Vision iNEXT, in Munich, New York, San Francisco and Beijing.
