| Carbon dioxide (CO2) |
Results mainly from burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. The CO2 generated from burning these fuels is the primary man-made contributor to the greenhouse effect.
| Combined heat and power generation |
The main principle of the combined heat and power generation is the decentralized utilization of the provided electricity and heat. The engine or gas turbine powers a generator that generates electric energy. The engine can also directly drive a machine or compressor (e.g. in compressed air generation). The waste heat from the engine block (coolant, oil) is passed through a heat exchanger and used to heat water. The exhaust-gas energy can be utilized to produce steam (process heat) and/or hot water (by means of a heat exchanger). Conventional technologies applied in the combined heat and power generation are steam turbines, combustion engines and gas turbines.
