The BMW Group produces die and mould cast non-ferrous metal parts. For die and mould casting, foundry mechanics cast the metal into permanent moulds made of steel with sand core sets and monitor the production process using control systems with remote displays.
They are highly trained personnel working on very modern machinery. They must also both understand and operate, monitor and, in some cases, repair the complicated systems.
Finally they must test and approve high quality cast parts. Technicians count on the assessments of the foundry mechanic - to improve and extend the production systems.
Their training initially tackles basic metalworking and metal processing techniques, manual and mechanical clamping as well as the use of cutting and joining methods. This is followed by the basic techniques of moulding, smelting, casting and the structure and function of casting systems.
