In addition to the wide range of colours, various materials and techniques make this a varied profession. Parts made of metal and plastic are given permanent protection from rust and brilliant finishes by means of various coatings.
Painters prime, grind, spray, immerse, flood, heat and cool. Lots of the work is automated, some of it is manual. Another part of this job concerns repairing accident damage to panels and adjusting neighbouring finishes to the same colour. Grinding and filling work is also required for levelling unevenness.
Common coating techniques include a high pressure spray process using a flow cup spray gun. High quality polishing systems are used to achieve a perfect surface finish.
Creativity is used instead of defined procedures for this purpose. This means that special coatings with an airbrush require artistic talent and manual skill. Mixing is also difficult - as approx. 4500 shades are possible! The job also entails protecting the environment.
