The BMW Group Award for Intercultural Learning is divided into two categories, Theory and Practice. It is a principle of the Award that entries be closely aligned to the basic philosophy of the LIFE concept.
Are you planning to submit a research paper in the “Theory” category?
In the Theory category, prizes are awarded for degree work and other academic research projects that address the issue of intercultural learning. Theoretical guidelines on this topic can be found, for example, in the “Theses of the LIFE Concept” and the “Principles of Intercultural Learning” by Professor Hans Hunfeld. In all disciplines, your work should demonstrate new ideas and an innovative approach to the issue of “Intercultural Learning” that can be seen to be original with respect to current academic teaching. Moreover, we especially welcome papers of an interdisciplinary nature. You will find more detailed competition requirements in the “Checklist for a successful application” (see below).
Are you planning to submit an entry in the “Practice” category?
Prizes are awarded to committed private individuals, groups and institutions who plan initiatives for intercultural learning processes and carry them out in the form of concrete projects – for instance in child, youth and adult education, in neighbourhood projects, cultural and sporting programmes, etc. In addition, the special prize for “Intercultural commitment” is awarded to honour the enduring efforts of an individual applicant in promoting intercultural learning.
Your application should clearly illustrate the way in which your project initiates and fosters intercultural learning processes, and how it encourages its participants to pursue independent and interdisciplinary learning and to act creatively whilst at the same time integrating the social environment in their activities. Further requirements can be seen in the checklist below: Valuable hints to be observed when putting intercultural learning projects into practice can be found in the “Munich theses of intercultural learning”. These basic principles were originally drawn up to describe the profile of intercultural schools, but they are also eminently applicable in an extracurricular context.
Checklist for a successful application:
The following criteria apply to applicants in both the Theory and Practice categories:
- Are intercultural learning processes being initiated and encouraged?
- Are key aspects of the LIFE concept being implemented?
- How innovative, creative and enduring is the concept or its manner of implementation?
- Can the project idea and its implementation be applied easily to other contexts?
- Does the project provide a stimulus for further development and emulation?
- Is the entry illustrated with clear documentation (on paper, video, CD-ROM or audio tape)?
