Enhanced driving performance with lower fuel consumption

The BMW Group’s long-term energy strategy – innovations for improved fuel economy.
The BMW Group is supportive of the Kyoto targets and has been working intensively for many years now towards a reduction in fleet fuel consumption. This is paying off. From 1995 to the end of 2008, the BMW Group was able to reduce CO2 emissions of their vehicles sold in Europe nearly by 27%. The respective voluntary requirements agreed on by the Association of European Car Manufacturers have been more than fulfilled.

This was achieved above all by the BMW Group’s comprehensive package of measures to significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels across all series and vehicle segments.

The BMW Group’s energy strategy is divided into three stages. In the short and long terms, vehicle fuel consumption will be further reduced through new, highly efficient engine generations, optimisation of aerodynamics, the use of innovative lightweight construction and intelligent vehicle energy management. The BMW Group summarises all of these measures under the term Efficient Dynamics.

In a further stage, the company facilitates additional fuel economy through the further electrification of the drivetrain and the use of hybridisation. In 2009, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 and the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, which offer 20% better fuel economy than comparable models featuring only an internal combustion engine, started in series production.

In the long term, the BMW Group regards electric mobility and the use of regeneratively produced hydrogen in the combustion engine as the most sustainable technologies. In November 2006, the BMW Group presented the BMW Hydrogen 7, the premium segment’s first hydrogen vehicle based on the BMW 7 Series. 600 MINI electric vehicles are currently being tested in the field in order to provide the company with valuable experience in the utilisation of electric mobility
