    Maximum Freedom for Visionary Concepts.
Based in Munich, BMW Group Research and Technology is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BMW AG and has been responsible for BMW Group research activities since 2003. The roughly 250 specialists working for the company have the clear mission to develop new technologies for use in the automobile.

To reach this goal, the project teams work on five research highlights crucial to the future of the automobile in our modern world: VehicleTechnology, CleanEnergy, EfficientDynamics, ConnectedDrive, and ITDrive.

The legal independence of BMW Group Research and Technology and flat hierarchies with short decision-making routes give the specialists creative freedom and maximum flexibility – essential prerequisites for a climate suited ideally for innovation. Integrated labs and workshops, in turn, ensures rapid practical implementation of the technologies developed in the car. Precisely this provided the possibility to complete the overall concept for the BMW H2R Hydrogen Car in just ten months in 2004, the car subsequently setting up nine international, officially acknowledged records.

Worldwide Network.
Through a comprehensive, in-house and external network, BMW Group Research and Technology has access to new trends and technologies. This includes the BMW Group’s worldwide innovation network with centres in the USA, Japan and Germany as well as joint ventures with companies, universities, colleges and research institutes such as the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (GRAI) in Saarbrücken.

BMW Group Research and Technology cooperates closely with the Eurécom Institute in the area of information and telecommunication technology. Together with nine international partners in industry and four universities, this Inter-European Institute is based in the Sophia Antipolis Science Part near Nice. The main areas of cooperation are Network Technologies, Broadband Wireless Networks as well as Mobility and Security.
